Informing UK skills strategy with the Digital Badging Commission

The Digital Badging Commission launched in May 2024 to bring together leading experts from across higher and further education, commerce and technology to broaden the understanding, development and adoption of digital badges and microcredentials by accrediting organisations and employers. We were invited to contribute to the Commission to inform recommendations for transforming skills and qualifications in the UK.

This work continues Grainne Hamilton’s collaborations with the RSA, which include co-defining the pioneering Cities of Learning UK blueprints (while contracted by DigitalMe / City & Guilds), which formed the Cities of Learning framework and the basis for the RSA Badge Standard. Amongst other applications, these have been used to define digital credentials to recognise learning in city-wide skills pathways in more than 9 cities.

I have engaged with Grainne in her work on open badges over a number of years. This has included… on the concept work she defined with Mozilla on open badge-based pathways that has informed innovative developments for capturing learning that happens anywhere, and enabling pathways towards enrichment opportunities. Grainne has extensive knowledge of digital badges, how badge pathways can be formed to best serve learners who need them most, and remains a trusted expert in this area.

Grainne Hamilton [and team] really pushed the boundaries and planned for emphasis on knowledge, skills, and attitudes with the ‘Cities of Learning framework’ which later became the ‘RSA badge standard’.
